Sciacca sits on the south-western coast, a fishing port stacked in tiers of ochre and pink houses above one of the busiest harbours in Sicily. From Palermo airport it is the shortest way in: 118 km inland across the Belice valley, roughly an hour and a quarter door to door. There is no direct train and the bus takes over three hours with a change, so a private transfer is usually the only sensible option — especially with luggage and a hotel in the old town, where the streets climb steeply from the port.

  • 77 minutes from the terminal, the fastest route to Sciacca
  • Direct drop-off in the upper town, where cars struggle to turn
  • Thermal spa town, ceramics and one of Sicily's great carnivals
  • Gateway to Selinunte, the Scala dei Turchi and Agrigento

Sciacca

About the destination

Sciacca has lived off the sea and off its hot springs since antiquity: the Greeks knew the sulphurous vapours of Monte Kronio, and the Romans built baths there. Today the town is known for three things — a fishing fleet that still lands its catch every morning, a ceramics tradition whose workshops line the old streets, and a February carnival with papier-mâché floats that fills the square for a week. The historic centre climbs in terraces from the port to Piazza Scandaliato, a wide belvedere hanging over the sea, and the Castello Incantato of Filippo Bentivegna, with thousands of stone heads carved into an olive grove, is a short drive out of town.

About the route

Road, traffic and timing

From Palermo Airport (PMO) to Sciacca is 118 km. The route leaves the coastal motorway near Alcamo and crosses the interior on the SS624 Palermo-Sciacca, through the Belice valley and its wheat country, joining the SS115 for the final descent to the coast. Drive time 1 hour 17 minutes, no tolls on the inland section.

Travel tips

Know before you go

  • Ask for the Piazza Scandaliato belvedere at sunset — the whole harbour opens up below
  • The fish market by the port works early: best before nine
  • Ceramics workshops close in the early afternoon and reopen around five

When to visit

Seasonal notes & events

February brings the Carnevale di Sciacca, one of the oldest in Sicily — book accommodation and transfers well ahead. Summer is hot and dry inland but the sea breeze cools the town. Spring and autumn are ideal for combining Sciacca with Selinunte and Agrigento.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How far is Sciacca from Palermo Airport?+

118 km, about 1 hour 17 minutes across the interior on the SS624 and SS115.

How much does the Palermo Airport to Sciacca transfer cost?+

The price is fixed and per vehicle, not per passenger: from €280 with a Standard Sedan (up to 3 passengers), €295 with a Mercedes E-Class, €355 with a Mercedes V-Class (up to 6). Round trip from €532, with 10% off the return leg. Tolls, fuel, waiting time and airport meet & greet are included; night or holiday surcharges, where they apply, are shown in the quote before you book.

Is there a train from Palermo Airport to Sciacca?+

No. Sciacca has no railway station: the options are a bus with a change, over three hours, or a private transfer.

Can the driver reach a hotel in the old town?+

Yes. The upper town is steep and narrow but drivable; our drivers know where a car can stop and where it cannot, and will take you as close to the entrance as the street allows.

Can we stop at Selinunte on the way?+

Yes, and it is a natural detour: the Greek temples of Selinunte are roughly halfway. Add the stop when booking and the driver will wait.

Is Sciacca a good base for the south coast?+

Yes. Agrigento and the Valley of the Temples are an hour east, the Scala dei Turchi slightly further, Selinunte half an hour west.
