Taormina
About the destination
Taormina perches 200 metres above the Ionian Sea on a natural terrace cut into the cliff face of Monte Tauro. Home to a 3rd-century BC Greek Theatre still used for performances under the stars, luxurious boutique hotels, and terraced gardens overflowing with bougainvillea — it is the jewel of the Sicilian Riviera and one of the Mediterranean's most celebrated destinations. Below the town, Isola Bella is a tiny island nature reserve connected to the shore by a narrow strip of sand. The pedestrian Corso Umberto is lined with designer boutiques, artisan gelaterias and terraces overlooking the bay. Just 5 km above Taormina, the village of Castelmola offers almond wine tastings and one of the most photographed panoramas in all of Sicily.
About the route
Road, traffic and timing
The journey from Catania Fontanarossa Airport (CTA) to Taormina covers 52 km on the A18 Messina-Catania motorway. The road runs along the Ionian coast with views of the Bay of Schisò and Mount Etna's east flank. Exit at Taormina/Giardini Naxos, then a short ascent on SS185 leads to the clifftop town. Toll cost is around €3.50 (already included in the fixed price). Traffic is light most of the year; expect mild congestion only on August Saturday afternoons and during major Teatro Antico events.
Travel tips
Know before you go
- Book early for August and the first week of September — Taormina sells out fast
- If your hotel is in the historic centre, the driver may drop you near Porta Catania (vehicle access is restricted on Corso Umberto)
- Bring layers: Taormina sits at 200 m and evening temperatures are 5–8 °C cooler than the airport
- ATMs and pharmacies are easily found on Corso Umberto; cash is rarely needed in restaurants
- Save your booking PDF offline — Taormina has limited mobile coverage in some hotels carved into the cliff

When to visit
Seasonal notes & events
Taormina is busiest from June to early September and during Easter week. Summer driving conditions are excellent but expect heat: vehicles are pre-cooled before pickup. Winter (November–March) offers quieter streets and lower hotel rates, though some attractions reduce hours. The Taormina Film Festival in June and the David di Donatello Awards bring celebrities and traffic — book your transfer 2–3 weeks ahead during these events.
