Monreale
About the destination
The Cathedral of Monreale (Duomo di Monreale) is one of the supreme achievements of Norman-Arab-Byzantine art. Commissioned by King William II in 1174, its interior is covered with over 6,340 m² of gold-background mosaics — the largest and most complete cycle of Byzantine mosaics in Italy. Christ Pantocrator dominates the apse, flanked by saints and angels in shimmering gold. The adjacent Benedictine cloister, with 228 paired columns adorned with unique carved capitals, is equally stunning. Monreale is part of the UNESCO Arab-Norman Palermo World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2015.
