Mount Etna
About the destination
Mount Etna, at 3,357 metres, is Europe's tallest and most active volcano — a UNESCO World Heritage site and a living geological spectacle that has shaped every aspect of Sicilian culture, agriculture and mythology. The volcanic soil produces some of the world's most distinctive wines (Etna DOC), and the cable car and guided hiking routes take you to crater rims from which you can see both the Ionian and Tyrrhenian seas on a clear day.
About the route
Road, traffic and timing
From Catania Airport (CTA) to Rifugio Sapienza on Etna's south side is 35 km via the A18 and SP92. The road climbs from sea level to 1,910 m through Nicolosi village, lava fields and chestnut woods. Drive time 45 minutes. North side (Piano Provenzana) is 60 minutes via Linguaglossa. No tolls; fuel and altitude-ready vehicle included.
Travel tips
Know before you go
- Bring layers — temperature drops 15–20 °C from sea level

When to visit
Seasonal notes & events
Best for hiking: late May–October. Cable car operates year-round (weather permitting). Winter (Dec–Mar) Piano Provenzana offers Sicily's only ski resort. Eruption activity is unpredictable; SAT monitors INGV bulletins and can reroute or refund if access is closed by authorities.
