Catania port is one of the main cruise stops of eastern Sicily, with Costa, MSC, Norwegian and Princess ships docking regularly. If you have a one-day stop, excursion options are many but time is limited: typically 8–10 hours of "shore time" before re-boarding. Here's how to plan it.
Catania port in practice
- Position: in the heart of the city centre, 5 minutes' walk from Piazza Duomo
- Cruise terminals: Stazione Marittima and Molo Vecchio
- Distance from the airport: 5 km
- On-site services: free tour operator shuttles from the dock, metered taxis at the gate, minibus parking
- Wi-Fi: free at the terminal
Unlike other Italian ports requiring shuttles to leave the harbour area, at Catania you walk straight into the centre.
Option 1: visit Catania on foot (5–7 hours)
Catania is perfect for a day visit: the UNESCO historic centre is compact and largely pedestrian.
Typical itinerary: 1. Piazza Duomo (5 min from the port): Cathedral of Sant'Agata, Elephant Fountain (u Liotru) 2. La Pescheria: the most atmospheric fish market in the Mediterranean (mornings, except Sundays) 3. Via Etnea: shopping, historic cafés, Etna view 4. Castello Ursino: civic museum in Swabian-Aragonese fortress 5. Monastero dei Benedettini: UNESCO, one of Europe's largest 6. Lunch: Sicilian arancino, granita with brioche, pasta alla Norma
Cost: zero transport, €30–50 for lunch + coffee + souvenirs
Pros: zero stress, no booking required Cons: if it rains or is very hot, it's demanding
Option 2: Taormina excursion (8 hours)
Taormina is 52 km from the port. Drive time is 50 minutes, leaving 4-5 hours for the destination.
Itinerary: - Departure from port at 09:00 - Arrival in Taormina at 10:00 - Visit Greek Theatre, Corso Umberto, Isola Bella (cable car descent) - Lunch with view of the Naxos bay - Possible stop at Castelmola for almond wine - Departure Taormina 15:00, return to port 16:00
Transport options: - Cruise ship tour bus (€80–120 per person): convenient but rigid, with 30+ other people - Train + walking (€8 round trip but 1h 30m one way, no luggage onboard): not recommended - SAT private transfer (€235 S-class 3 pax with 4h wait, €265 minivan 6 pax): flexible, the driver waits in Taormina and brings you back in time for re-boarding
For groups of 4-6, the private transfer is significantly cheaper than the ship tour (€60-100/person vs €80-120) and infinitely more flexible.
Option 3: Etna excursion (6–7 hours)
Etna is 35 km from the port. It's the most requested "wow" experience for Catania stops.
Itinerary: - 09:00 port departure - 09:45 arrival at Rifugio Sapienza (1,910 m) - Cable car (€33) + jeep + walk on Silvestri Craters (3 hours) - 13:30 lunch at Etna DOC winery with tasting - 15:30 return to port
Transport options: - Cruise ship tour (€90–150 per person): includes cable car + wine tasting - SAT private transfer (€175 sedan 3 pax or €230 minivan 6 pax with 4h wait): more flexible, you decide whether to take the cable car
Option 4: combined Catania + Taormina (full day)
With 9–10 hours of stop time, you can combine Catania centre in the morning + Taormina in the afternoon: - 08:30–11:30 Catania centre on foot - 11:30 private transfer to Taormina (50 min) - 12:30 lunch in Taormina - 14:00–16:00 visit Greek Theatre, Corso Umberto - 16:00 departure, 17:00 at the port
Cost of Catania → Taormina → return-to-port transfer: about €260–290 for a group up to 6, including waiting. Divided by 6 = €43-48 per person, vs €120-180 of ship tours for the same experience.
Practical tips for cruise passengers
1. Always calculate a 1-hour buffer: re-boarding closes 30 minutes before departure, and Catania centre traffic can surprise you 2. Light luggage: no suitcase, only a small backpack for water and snacks 3. Cash on hand: some markets and bars don't accept cards 4. Comfortable shoes: both Catania centre and Taormina have lava stone roads 5. Charged phone + power bank: you'll need it for offline Maps + photos + calling the driver in case of delay 6. Identify the driver: with a private transfer, note the license plate or an identifying detail before disembarking 7. Summer: temperatures 30°C+, bring water and a hat 8. No whisky onboard before going ashore: stay sharp
Calculate your cruise transfer
SAT offers private transfers for cruise passengers with timing synchronized to re-boarding. Enter port, destination and re-boarding time: the system calculates time + buffer.
